Provider Tip of the Week: Create a Calm Holiday Environment for Children

Creating a calm holiday environment for children requires thoughtful preparation.

The Early Learning Resource Center 5’s tip of the week includes a few quick tips to help providers set the tone.

These include:

  • Choose the right location - Pick a low-traffic, quiet corner or unused room. Use room dividers or curtains for privacy if it’s a shared space.

  • Comfortable seating - Add soft floor pillows, bean bags, or lounge chairs. Also, use rugs or mats to soften the space.

  • Soothing decor - Use neutral or soft colors such as light blue, lavender, or beige. Add soft lighting - for example, salt lamps, fair lights, or dimmable lamps.

  • Books and reading material - Stock a small shelf or basket with calming or inspirational books, poetry, or magazines. Include adult coloring books or simple sketchpads if desired.

  • Calming music or sounds - Set up a small speaker or white noise machine. Play gentle instrumental music, nature sounds, or ambient soundscapes (via playlist or app).

  • Mindfulness aids - Include items such as stress balls, aromatherapy diffusers, or guided meditation cards.

  • Rules and signage - Use a simple sign - for example, “Quiet Zone - Take a Break” - to set expectations. Encourage silence, respect for others, and short stays (10 to 15 minutes).
