Health and Safety Tip of the Week: Practice Before the Fire Drill
Early childhood educators and children should practice fire safety-related measures before taking part in their monthly fire drill, said Dominique Webster-Outten, ELRC Region 5’s health and safety coach.
Before the Fire Drill
Prior to the monthly fire drill, Webster-Outten said, providers should review evacuation plans with staff and ensure that everyone knows their role. Staff should walk children through the evacuation route so it feels familiar, talk with them about what they may hear during the drill - such as the fire alarm - and reassure them that practicing helps to keep everyone safe.
It is also important to check that emergency contact information, attendance records, and emergency supplies are ready to go. Staff should also verify that exits are clear and evacuation maps are current.
After the drill is over, take a few minutes to celebrate what went well and discuss any improvements with your team. Positive reinforcement helps children and staff to feel confident and prepared.
“Fire drills aren't just a licensing requirement,” Webster-Outten said. “They're an opportunity to teach children that staying calm, listening carefully, and working together helps keep everyone safe.”
