ELRC Region 5 Formula Banks Fed Nearly 5,000 Babies in 2025

The Greater Pittsburgh Infant Formula Bank’s formula bank sites fed nearly 5,000 babies and distributed more than 30,000 cans or bottles of formula in 2025, according to a year in review for the formula bank.

The formula bank network, which is managed by Beverly’s PGH, launched in June 2022 and has seven public bank locations and a mobile unit. 

In 2025, the formula banks fed a total of 4,976 babies. The formula banks also:

  • Had 14,240 visits for infant formula support 

  • Distributed 30,724 cans or bottles of formula

  • Purchased $485,685 in formula 

  • Received $159,221 in donated formula

The number of visits to the banks rose from 1,053 in 2022 to 5,459 last year. There was a 24% increase in checkouts at the ELRC food bank site between 2024 and 2025.

At the ELRC Region 5 formula bank site, a total of 336 individual babies were fed in 2025 during 764 visits for infant formula support. A total of 882 formula cans or bottles were distributed. The site had a 5% staff error rate, which is calculated based on the number of cans or bottles of formula missing from the site without a checkout attached.

Other statistics for the formula banks include:

  • 70% WIC enrollment rate for bank users

  • 24% preterm birth rate for babies fed (born before 37 weeks)

  • 9% rate of babies that are breastfed and using formula for supplementation 

The formula banks include: Hilltop, McKeesport, Highlands, Homewood, Beverly’s HQ, Monessen, ELRC Region 5, and the Babies in the Burgh Mobile Unit.
